A brief detour from the main road in Lava Beds Natonal Monument leads you to the intriguing Fleener Chimneys, the birthplace of the rugged Devils Homestead aa flow. This unique spatter cone formed as molten lava erupted, causing globules of lava to accumulate atop one another, akin to sticky oatmeal, resulting in a 50-foot (15-meter) deep central chimney. Here, you'll find shaded picnic tables nestled among juniper trees. Remarkably, these tables were crafted by the Civilian Conservation Corps over six decades ago, utilizing massive logs sourced from Oregon Caves National Monument and locally gathered rocks.
