Situated on the northern slope of the expansive Medicine Lake Shield Volcano, named for its broad and gently sloping profile, this location may not be as immediately recognizable as iconic volcanoes like Mount Shasta. Nevertheless, Medicine Lake holds the distinction of being the largest volcano in terms of both surface area and volume within the Cascade Range. The volcanic activity here has given rise to a wide spectrum of lava types, ranging from iron-rich basalt to silica-rich rhyolite and obsidian. It is believed that the diverse eruptions were sourced from re-melted sections of the Earth's crust and an influx of material from the mantle.
