Snowshoes and cross-country skiing

Snowy mountains and trails warrant exploration in Klamath County. Is there any better way to experience the crisp mountain air and scenic vistas than on a pair of cross country skis or snowshoes? With an abundant number of mountains and trails to discover, Klamath County is sure to be the perfect winter getaway.

Crater Lake National Park

Enjoy a ranger-led snowshoe hike or cross-country skiing in Oregon’s only national park. The pristine snow is a sight to behold. No matter which activity you choose to participate in, be sure to follow one of the many marked trails. Snowshoeing is allowed most everywhere except inside the caldera and rentals are available at the Rim Village Gift Shop. However, rentals are not requires for ranger-guided walks, during which snowshoes are provided free of charge. For cross-country skiers, it is best to ask the Steel Visitor Center for recommended routes.

Brown Mountain

Bring your skis and ride the slopes of Brown Mountain. At 7,311 ft. you’ll also have awe-inspiring views of the Sky Lakes Wilderness and Mountain Lakes Wilderness areas. You’ll enjoy this fun ride on a volcano, but watch out for “hot spots”. Steam vents from inside the mountain leave areas where there’s no snow. This area is also great for snowmobiling and downhill skiing.

Walt Haring Sno-Park

Located near Chemult, Walt Haring offers multiple snowmobile and cross-country ski trails. The trailhead sits on the eastern edge of the Cascade Range. The multiple trails are groomed by volunteers each winter. They offer classic skiing experiences and are usually covered with snow from mid-December through mid-March.

Willamette Pass

Willamette Pass offers downhill and cross-country skiers, and snowboarders a variety of runs from mid-November through March. Seven lifts including the states only high-speed ski passenger lift will take you to 360 degrees of alpine adventure. Ski and board to your heart’s content with Twilight and Night Skiing available. While a downhill ski resort, for those who prefer sledding, the Nordic/Tubing Center is located at the west end of the main parking lot. Tubes and towing provided.

Odell Lake

Guests can ski or snowshoe directly from the cabins and lodge to the groomed trails at Odell Lake Lodge & Resort. The vast landscapes, trail systems, mountains, and nearby meadows provide the perfect cross-country ski and snowshoe conditions. Rentals are offered through the resort.
