Considered to be one of the greatest dramas of Americana, Thornton Wilder’s Pulitzer Prize-winning play is a celebration of lives filled with friends and neighbors and genuine goodness. It is a must-see for theatre lovers of all ages.
With a sparse set and minimal props, the play is introduced and narrated by the Stage Manager, who welcomes the audience to the fictional town of Grover’s Corners, New Hampshire, talks directly to the audience and acknowledges that he is actually in the play. He also knows what will happen in the future and occasionally comments on events that will happen to characters years later.
The play follows the daily lives of the residents of Grover’s Corners from 1901 through 1913. The first act describes the day-to-day activities of the townspeople . . . principally the members of the Webb family and the Gibbs family . . . while the second act, which takes place three years later, focuses on love and marriage and the third act, which takes place nine years later, discusses death.
In Our Town, Wilder explores the stability of human traditions and the re-assuring steadfastness of the natural environment, while emphasizing the transience of human lives and the rapid passage of time. As one of the characters in Act III says about the living, “They just don’t understand!”
